I saved a ton on my last trip by booking a flight to a different city

I was going to Berlin but flights were crazy expensive. On a whim, I checked flights to Prague instead, which were only $180 round trip from NYC. I took a 4-hour bus from Prague to Berlin for about $25. It added a little travel time but saved me over $300 on airfare. Has anyone else found a cheaper nearby airport that worked out?

My friend Sarah did something similar flying into Oslo instead of Stockholm last year. She saved like $250 on the flight and took a six hour train ride that was actually really scenic through the mountains. The only annoying part was the train got delayed two hours but she said it was totally worth it for the price difference.

I always booked direct but your trick just saved me a bundle on my next trip.

Remember when everyone swore booking direct was the only way to go? I found a flight deal once that was so much cheaper through a third party, I was sure my seat would be in the luggage hold. Worked out fine, though. Makes me wonder what kind of trick @the_ben found that actually works without the usual headache. The whole travel booking game feels like it changes every six months.
