I finally stopped pre-booking hostels 3 months out

After 4 years of locking everything in early, I landed in Lisbon last month and found the same bunk I paid $42 for listed at $19 at the front desk... booking sites are just playing us. Has anyone else had better luck just walking in and asking for their walk-up rate?
