I finally stopped booking hotels through third party sites
For years I used sites like Expedia and Priceline to book my rooms, thinking I was getting the best deal. But after a trip to Nashville last spring, I added up my total costs and realized the fees added $45 to a single night stay. Now I call the hotel directly and ask for their best rate, which is usually $10 to $20 cheaper. I also ask about free breakfast or parking, things the third party sites never mention. Has anyone else noticed how much those booking fees can add up?

...and that's exactly why I started doing the same thing. Called a hotel direct last month, got a rate $15 under what they had online, and @mitchell.shane it was the same deal - they honored it no problem. Felt kind of dumb for all those years paying the middleman, like I was the sucker in a bad joke. The fees really stack up when you're not paying attention, especially on weekend stays.
