Booked a $38 "charming" hostel in Amsterdam, got a 6 bed room where the window didn't close and a guy snored like a chainsaw
So I finally tried the whole budget hostel thing on my trip to Amsterdam a couple weeks back, mostly because hotels there were quoting me $210 a night and I just couldn't do it. Found this place for $38 a night with decent pics and a 7.8 rating, thought I cracked the code. Get there and it's a 6 bed dorm where the window is propped open with a paperback because the latch is broken, and my bunk is right under it. First night it drops to like 40 degrees and I'm sleeping in my hoodie with my coat on top like a burrito. Then this guy two bunks over starts snoring around 1am, not normal snoring, the kind that rattles the whole frame, and I just laid there doing math on how much a cab to a hotel would cost. Ended up buying $9 earplugs from a pharmacy the next morning like a total rookie. Is there some trick to picking hostels that doesn't involve reading 400 reviews, or do I just eat the hotel cost next time?
Was it really that bad though? You paid $38 in a city where hotels want $210, so you saved $172 that first night even after the $9 earplugs. A cold room and some dude snoring is annoying for a few hours, but you still woke up in Amsterdam with a fat wallet. My trick is just booking a top bunk away from the window if the photos show one, and bringing my own earplugs from home for like two bucks. For that price gap I'd take the snoring every time.
