A hostel worker in Lisbon said my packing cubes were why I kept paying bag fees
I was flying Ryanair every few weeks and getting hit with the 55 euro gate fee over and over, and I just assumed it was part of budget travel. Then a guy running the front desk at my hostel in Lisbon watched me repack one morning and said my cubes were puffing everything up so the bag never fit the sizer. I switched to rolling clothes and stuffing socks inside shoes, and my bag fit the metal frame on the first try. That one tip has kept about 220 euros in my pocket since spring. What small packing change actually cut your costs?
Learned that same lesson the hard way when I got stopped at the gate in Dublin with a bag that was stuffed to the brim. Packing cubes are great for staying neat but they waste so much space with those thick walls and gaps between them. Now I just roll everything tight and wear my heaviest jacket and boots on the plane, never paid a fee since.
