Vent: I fed my kids frozen nuggets for a month before I did the math on a whole chicken
Last month I finally sat down and compared what I was spending on frozen nuggets and fries versus just roasting a whole chicken on Sunday. The nugget dinners were running me about $4.50 a night for the three of us, and half the time the kids ate like two bites and left the rest, so I was basically paying to throw food out. A whole bird at the store near me is $6.99, and with a bag of carrots and some rice it feeds us two full dinners plus sandwiches the next day. The part that blew my mind was the timing, the oven does all the work while I clean up the kitchen, so it is not even harder than standing there shaking a tray. I also started saving the bones in a freezer bag for stock, which I used to just toss in the trash like a chump lol. Has anyone else done the whole chicken thing, and how do you use up the leftovers before they turn?
The bone saving thing is a game changer, I keep a bag in the freezer and once it's full I just dump it in the crockpot with some onion scraps and let it go all day. For leftovers I shred whatever is left and mix it with mayo and celery for chicken salad, or throw it in quesadillas when I'm too tired to cook. If the kids are getting sick of it I freeze the shredded stuff flat in bags so it doesn't go bad before I use it.
