TIL my neighbor's $4 lentil soup beats my $18 meal prep every time
I got to talking with my neighbor Carol last Tuesday while we were both pulling weeds. She mentioned she feeds her family of four dinner for under ten bucks most nights. I told her about my weekly meal prep routine and how I spend around 80 dollars on chicken and veggies. She laughed and invited me over to watch her make lentil soup. She used a bag of lentils, two carrots, one onion, some garlic, and a ham bone she had saved from a holiday dinner. Total came to maybe 4 dollars and it fed her, her husband, two teenagers, and me with leftovers. I felt a little silly about all the money I was spending on prepped containers that I half threw out anyway. Has anyone else had a moment where a simple cheap meal made you rethink your whole grocery list?
