That $5 thrift store slow cooker finally paid off

My neighbor Carol told me to just dump a bag of frozen chicken and a jar of salsa in there for tacos and I thought she was nuts. Three hours later I had the best shredded chicken I've made in months for less than seven bucks. What's your go-to cheap meal that sounds weird but actually works?

Carol's 4pm text said "just trust me" and I was so skeptical I almost ordered pizza instead. My first attempt I used a whole frozen bag of chicken thighs with some random salsa verde and it came out so good I ate it for three days straight. I've also done the canned tuna + cream of mushroom soup + frozen peas thing over rice when I'm really broke. It looks like cat food while you're stirring it but somehow tastes amazing. My husband won't eat it if he sees me make it so I just plate it before he gets home.

@paigewood you're right about the salsa verde being key, I tried it with regular red salsa once and it was thin and watery. The green stuff has just the right texture for some reason. You said "frozen bag of chicken thighs" but I gotta tell you, try it with breasts next time. Thighs get too greasy for tacos. Nobody wants a soggy tortilla situation. Also that tuna mess you're making sounds like a war crime but I'm weirdly curious now. Maybe don't plate it for the husband just serve it in the pot and pretend it's something else.
