Stopped at a grocery store in Cleveland last week and saw brown bananas for 19 cents a pound, got me thinking about whether ugly produce is worth the hassle
I was walking through the markdown rack at a store on West 25th and saw a whole bag of brown bananas for 19 cents a pound, plus a crate of soft tomatoes for 49 cents a pound. One side of me says grab them all, freeze what you can and make banana bread, sauce, whatever, because that is real savings when a dozen eggs costs $4. The other side says half of it goes bad before you use it, so you just wasted a buck and an hour of your night. I ended up buying 3 pounds of bananas and made 2 loaves, but I still tossed one tomato. So where do you draw the line on markdown produce, is it always worth it or do you skip it unless you have a plan the same day?
