My rice cooker died mid batch and I had 4 pounds of dry beans staring at me
Last Thursday I was prepping my cheap meal plan for the whole month, and my 6 year old rice cooker just quit on me right when I had 4 pounds of dry black beans soaked and ready. I was standing in my kitchen in Fort Wayne at like 9pm trying to figure out what to do because I had already dumped the old plan and the beans were going to spoil if I left them. I ended up dragging out my big soup pot and simmering them on the stove for almost 2 hours, which used way more gas than the rice cooker ever did and made my whole apartment smell like a bean factory. The worst part is I had to babysit the pot and stir every 15 minutes so they didn't stick, so I lost the whole night. I got 8 containers of beans out of it but I am still annoyed about the gas bill and the wasted evening. Now I am scared to buy another cheap rice cooker and I can't afford to spend more than $30 on a replacement, so has anyone found a way to cook dry beans without a machine or am I stuck with the stove forever?
