Just realized my rice cooker was costing me more than cooking on the stove

I was at home making dinner last week and added up the electricity usage on my cheap rice cooker compared to just boiling water in a pot, and the cooker was using twice the power for the same amount of rice. Anyone else notice their small appliances are eating up the electric bill more than they save?

I ran the numbers on my Zojirushi last month and it was pulling 600 watts for an hour to cook one cup of rice. A pot on my gas stove does the same job in about 15 minutes. The rice cooker runs a heating element the whole cycle, then switches to "keep warm" which can add another dollar a month if you forget to unplug it. I switched to the stove method for small batches and only use the cooker now when I make four cups or more.

Wait, are we comparing watts to gas though? That 600 watts for an hour is like 0.6 kilowatt-hours, which at average US rates is maybe 7 or 8 cents total. Your gas stove burner probably uses way more than that in 15 minutes unless you have crazy cheap gas.
