I was wasting so much money on fresh herbs until my basil plant died
For years, I'd buy those little plastic packs of fresh cilantro or parsley for $3 each, use a tiny bit, and watch the rest go bad in my fridge. I thought it was just part of the cost of good flavor. The moment it clicked was last month when my one little basil plant, which I kept for looks, got a fungus and died. I went to make a big pot of marinara and had to buy a pack. Staring at that $3.49 charge for a handful of leaves I used to just snip for free made me feel so silly. I did the math and I was easily spending $15 to $20 a month just on herbs that mostly got thrown out. Now I'm growing a few basic ones in pots on my windowsill. It's not fancy, but having mint, parsley, and oregano on hand has cut down my grocery runs. What other small, fresh ingredients do you guys grow at home to save cash?

My rosemary plant is basically a twig in dirt at this point, but I still feel like a fancy chef when I use it. What's the hardest herb to keep alive?

Man, I used to be all about basil being the impossible one. I actually thought rosemary was the easiest thing to grow. Then I got one of those little store plants and it turned into a sad twig just like yours. I think I probably overwatered it or something because now I'm the one with the twig. Its weird how the stuff you think is simple ends up being the trickiest.

That basil fungus did you a favor honestly. @miller.paul, my rosemary looks just as sad but it still tastes better than the plastic pack stuff.
