I finally tried those bulk dried beans my grandma swore by
For years I thought dried beans were just for people with way too much time on their hands. My grandma always told me they are WAY cheaper than canned and taste better too. I finally gave in about 3 months ago after a 12-pack of canned beans hit $18 at my local Kroger. Bought a 5-pound bag of pinto beans for $3.50 and watched a YouTube video on how to cook them. After soaking overnight and simmering for about 90 minutes they came out perfect and tasted fresher than anything from a can. Now I make a big batch every Sunday and it saves me around $8 a week on my chili and burrito fillings. Anyone else made the switch and have tips for seasoning without going overboard?

Switched over about a YEAR ago and never looked back honestly. I add a bay leaf and a clove of garlic to the pot while they cook for a subtle depth without going crazy. Also learned the hard way that you gotta SKIM the foam off the top or your beans get this weird bitter taste. A pinch of baking soda in the soak water makes the skins softer too. Just go easy on salt until theyre almost done or they come out tough.

Right?! I was the SAME way until I finally broke down and tried it. Now I feel like a total idiot for all those years of overpaying for canned beans. Bay leaf is a MUST, I also throw in a dried chile or two for a little warmth without making it spicy.
