Heads up on a dried bean time sink

I used dried beans to save cash on my soup. They needed so long to cook that I almost gave up. How do you plan for long cook times without wasting energy?

Have you found that saving money on food usually means more work? I deal with this by soaking beans overnight so they're ready faster. It's a common trade-off, like when you grow your own vegetables but have to water them every day.
