Bought the 10 pound bag of rice, but is bulk actually cheaper?

I saw a breakdown from a food blog out of Cleveland that compared unit prices at my local grocery store. Turns out the 10 pound bag of rice was 89 cents a pound, but the 2 pound bag was on sale for 99 cents a pound, so barely a difference. But the big bag takes up so much shelf space and risks bugs if I don't use it fast enough. Is the savings worth the storage hassle and waste if it goes bad? I'm wondering if anyone else has crunched the numbers on their staples and found bulk deals are more hype than helpful. What items do you actually save on by buying big, and which ones do you stick to small sizes for?
