Bought a cheap rice cooker for $18 and the whole thing went wrong
Picked up one of those $18 rice cookers from the grocery store last month because I wanted to save on takeout. First time using it, the rice came out crunchy on top and burnt on the bottom, and the lid cracked after the third batch. Has anyone found a decent budget rice cooker that actually works or should I just stick to the stovetop method?

Disagree with the premise a bit. Ive had a similar cheap cooker from Walmart for about two years now, the Dash Mini rice cooker, and it does fine for me. You have to rinse the rice first and use the right water ratio, about 1.5 cups water per cup of rice. Also keep the lid closed the whole time, no peeking. Maybe yours was a dud or user error, but cheap ones can work if you treat them right.

Two years is barely breaking it in, honestly. Wait until the heating element starts acting up around year three, then we'll talk. Rinsing the rice and measuring right is basic stuff, but that doesn't fix a cheap thermostat that craps out mid-cook. My sister had a similar one and it cooked fine for a while, then suddenly turned everything to mush on the same settings. Maybe you got lucky with your batch, but these things are basically disposable appliances. It's not like we're talking about a lifetime investment here, just a thing that boils water.
