Went to a job site in Portland last week and noticed everyone using different mortar mixes

Half the crew was swearing by Type N for everything while the other guys were mixing Type S for the same brick walls. I saw one guy literally get into it with his foreman over which one bonds better in wet climates. What mix do you all use for exterior work in rainy areas and why?

Portland job site, huh? I'd bet money that foreman was just trying to get everyone to argue so he didn't have to actually work. In my experience, the real fight should be over whether you're using a proper scratch coat or not. Type N for general brickwork, Type S for anything that'll see a lot of water or freeze-thaw cycles. But honestly, half those guys probably just grabbed whatever bag was closest and argued about it later.

Read that @the_lee fella hit it spot on with Type S for wet weather work.
