Swore by hand mixing mortar, but a big job made me switch to power mixers.
We finished the foundation so much faster with a mixer that I'm never going back!

My grandpa mixed mortar by hand for 40 years and never had shoulder problems, he just had good form. I get what @hayes.uma is saying about wear and tear, but it's not a sure thing for everyone. A lot of it comes down to how you work and taking care of your body outside the job. I still hand mix for smaller jobs because it keeps me connected to the work in a way a machine doesn't. There's a skill and a pace to it that I don't want to lose.

Seriously, the health side of it is huge that no one talks about! Hand mixing destroys your back and shoulders over time, leading to constant pain later on. A power mixer saves your body from all that damage, not just your time on the job. I've met older guys who can barely lift their arms from years of mixing by hand. It's a total game changer for your long term well being, lol.
