My mortar mix was acting weird until I checked the sand pile

Last month in Toledo I was laying block on a garage and the mortar kept slumping no matter what I did. I kept adding more cement and it just got stickier, not firmer. After two hours of fighting it, my helper pointed out the sand we got delivered had a ton of clay in it. I switched to a washed sand from the yard down the road and the mix behaved perfect instantly. Has anyone else had a bad sand delivery mess up a whole morning, or do you always check your pile before you start mixing?
