Got humbled by a 40 year old brick wall in Savannah
Was repointing a place on Jones Street and the old lime mortar practically crumbled in my hand while my modern mix sat there like concrete, so now I keep a spray bottle and actually read up on soft mortars before touching anything pre-1930, and I'm curious if anyone else here has a story about a building that made them rethink their whole mix.
Feel that pain, old lime mortar will humble you fast when you expect it to hold like modern stuff. I had the same wake up call on a 1920s bungalow where my patch mix was way too hard and cracked within a year. Now I test mortar on a scrap piece before it ever touches the wall, and it has saved me a few times since.
