Buttered my joints wrong for 20 years

Was laying brick on a job in Nashville last week and my mortar kept sagging. A old timer walked over, said "you're buttering it backwards, son." Switched to the long edge method and everything locked up solid after that. Anyone else ever get schooled by a random passerby?

Long edge trick just means you print flipping on the long side so pages read like a book.
