An old foreman's two-word critique saved my brick pattern

Back in 2007 on a job in Dayton, this foreman watched me lay a running bond for an hour. He just said 'too perfect.' I thought he was nuts until he pointed out the joints lined up like a machine did it. Now I mix in a few intentional offsets, keeps the wall from looking fake. Anyone else get told that before?

That machine-perfect look stands out in a bad way, like a printed picture instead of something a person built. The tiny flaws give the wall character and show it was laid by hand, which is what people actually want to see. Once you start noticing the difference, you can't unsee it, and it changes how you judge every brick job you pass.
