Vent: the rebrand color hit my screen wrong on a client's 4K monitor at 9pm

I was finishing a logo rollout for a coffee shop in Portland and we locked this deep forest green on my laptop. It looked rich, solid, like the brand. Then the client pulls up the press kit on their big 4K screen and the green went almost black. Just this muddy void. They said 'this is not what we approved' and I had no answer. Turns out my screen brightness was cranked and the color profile was off. I checked the hex, it was correct on paper but the saturation just died on their panel. I fixed it by pulling the green up a few notches and testing on three devices, but the trust hit was real. Has anyone else had a color look perfect on one monitor and completely different on another? How do you handle that before sending final files?

Ugh, yeah. Nothing like watching a brand color turn into a puddle of black goo on a client's fancy monitor to make you question your whole career. I've been burned by that exact thing. My trick now is to check the color on a cheap laptop with a crappy screen before I send anything. If it still looks decent there, it's probably fine. Also, I always export a test JPEG and email it to myself, then open it on my phone with the brightness at half. It's not perfect, but it catches the worst disasters. And honestly, some panels just crush dark colors no matter what you do. You can't fix stupid hardware. You just have to say "it's calibrated" and hope they don't squint too hard.
