That 1998 logo redesign still haunts my local hardware store

I walked into Brown's Hardware in Akron last month and the new sign they put up in 1998, with that clip-art wrench and jagged yellow font, still looks worse than the hand-painted one my grandfather photographed back in 1972, so why do companies insist on fixing what wasn't broken, and has anyone else seen a rebrand that made a store feel less trustworthy?

That "fixing what wasn't broken" line hits hard. The clip-art look screams cheap even though it probably cost them more than the old hand-painted sign ever did.
