One font swap beat my whole redesign for a local bike shop

I helped a shop in Portland update their branding last month. They had this old logo with a heavy italic font and a chainring icon that looked like a pizza cutter. I compared two directions side by side for them, one with a modern sans-serif and one that kept their original feel but cleaned up the spacing. The sans-serif version won by a mile because it made the shop name readable from across the street, which matters when people are driving by at 25 mph. The owner said it felt less like a 90s mountain bike catalog and more like a shop that actually services e-bikes now. I learned that sometimes you don't need a full redesign, just a font weight and letter spacing tweak can do the heavy lifting. Has anyone else found that small typography changes beat total logo overhauls for local businesses?
