Noticed a local coffee shop changed their logo to a generic sans-serif font and lost all their personality

I walked into Brew Haus in downtown Denver this morning and didn't even recognize the sign at first. They had this hand-drawn quirky rooster thing before, and now it's just a plain circle with 'coffee' in Helvetica. Felt like a chain store. Why do small businesses always do this when they try to look 'modern'?

My old gym did the same thing, now it looks like a dentist office waiting room.
