TIL my Japanese maple was planted way too deep
I noticed my 3 year old Japanese maple was looking sad last spring with yellowing leaves and stunted growth. After digging around the base I found the root flare was buried 4 inches below the soil line from when the nursery potted it up. Has anyone else had success fixing a tree that was planted too deep or is it usually a lost cause?

Actually maples have shallow roots so 4 inches deep might be too far gone already.

My buddy had the same issue with a tree he got from a big box store. He carefully dug it up and replanted it at the right depth, kept it watered for a month, and it actually bounced back.
