That greenhouse in Portland where every plant was somehow thriving
Last Saturday I stopped by this small neighborhood greenhouse off Division Street because I needed some new basil starts. The owner, an older woman named Carol, told me she'd been fighting aphids for three straight weeks but her marigolds were pulling triple duty as traps and companion plants. I walked the whole place and every single shelf looked like a magazine photo, even the dark corner where my own herbs always go leggy. She said it came down to checking each plant daily at 7am with a cheap hand lens and removing anything suspicious before it spread. I bought a tiny ficus there and it's already pushing out two new leaves in my bathroom. Has anyone else found that one spot where the person just has a magic touch, or is it all just relentless daily care?
