Serious question, is the flavor difference in homegrown peppers really that obvious, or have I just been buying bad ones?

Taste a homegrown jalapeno next to a store bought one and you'll think they're from different planets. The grocery store versions are just sad, watery imitations with no real kick. My homegrown ones pack a punch and taste like summer, not like cardboard. You've definitely been buying the bland stuff.
