Root rot nearly killed my fiddle leaf fig last week

I was watering my fiddle leaf fig in my apartment in Denver like usual but noticed the bottom leaves turning yellow and droopy fast. After pulling it out of the pot I found mushy black roots from overwatering even though I thought I was being careful with my schedule. Anyone else had to rescue a plant from root rot and actually bring it back?

Wait, aren't you supposed to just ignore houseplants and they thrive on neglect? That's what I tell myself every time I kill another one.

troy you're not alone lol. i actually heard this thing on a plant podcast where this guy said "neglect" for plants means like watering once a week not once a month. a lot of common houseplants like pothos and snake plants can handle being forgotten for a bit but they still need some basic care.
