Overheard a gardener talking about soil pH, now I second-guess everything

At the community plot on 12th Street last Saturday, this older guy told someone that hydrangea color is a lie, that the blue ones at the nursery are dyed or grown in aluminum sulfate, and the pink ones just got calcium. I dug up my 3 hydrangeas that night and tested the soil with a cheap $8 kit, and sure enough, mine read way more basic than I thought. I've been watering these things with tap water for 2 years, and now I'm wondering if my city water is doing more harm than good. Has anyone else tested their soil and found out their water was messing with their plants?
