My terrarium moss turned brown in 3 days and I finally figured out why
I set up a 10 gallon terrarium two months ago with sheet moss I ordered from a shop in Portland. Last Tuesday I noticed the moss went from bright green to crispy brown patches near the glass. Turns out I was misting it twice a day with tap water, and the chlorine plus the mineral buildup was cooking it. I switched to distilled water and moved the tank 4 feet away from the window, and new growth came back in about a week. Has anyone else had tap water wreck their moss, or is it just my city's hard water?

Tap water is the number one killer of moss and nobody wants to hear it. That chlorine and calcium builds up in the moss and there's no coming back from it once it crusts over. Distilled is fine but rainwater is free and the moss loves it. You probably didn't even need to move the tank, the water was doing most of the damage. Portland water isn't even that hard compared to a lot of places, so this would've happened to you anywhere.
