My neighbor's orchid died after 3 weeks and I'm pretty sure it was my fault

Last month I offered to water her orchids while she was out of town for 10 days. I thought I knew what I was doing, I've kept a pothos alive for 2 years. But I gave that phalaenopsis a full cup of water every 3 days, right into the crown. By week 2 the leaves went yellow, by week 3 the roots were mush. She came back and just looked at it, didn't even get mad. That silence was worse. I've since read that orchids like to dry out completely between waterings and you should water the media, not the plant. Has anyone else killed a plant trying to be helpful? How do you recover from that with the plant owner?
