Met a guy at the plant swap who swore by boiling banana peels for fertilizer

Was at the monthly plant swap in my town last weekend and this older dude kept pushing his banana peel tea method on everyone. He said he boils 3 peels in 2 cups of water, lets it sit overnight, and uses it on his monstera every 2 weeks. I tried it on my pothos and within 5 days the leaves started turning brown at the edges. Turns out the potassium levels can get way too high if you don't dilute it right. Has anyone else had a bad experience with that DIY fertilizer trick?

That banana peel tea guy sounds like he's running a plant murder operation out of his kitchen. Nothing like taking solid advice from a stranger at a swap meet and watching your pothos commit photosynthesis suicide. Classic case of someone reading one blog post and suddenly thinking they're a botanist. Overloading plants with potassium is like giving a toddler straight espresso - it's just gonna end badly. I stick to regular fertilizer from the store diluted to a quarter strength and call it a day. Plants don't need gourmet garbage water from your trash.
