Hot take: pruning advice from a master gardener in Denver saved my roses

I used to cut my hybrid teas back hard every fall, like down to 12 inches. Last spring a guy at the botanic garden there told me I was stripping their winter protection and to leave 24 to 30 inches, then do a second trim in March after the last frost. I tried it this year and got way more blooms, but also more dieback on two bushes. Are the extra flowers worth the risk, or was he just used to a milder zone than mine?
