A nursery owner in Fresno told me my soil mix was drowning my succulents, and she was right
I used to water my succulents every 5 days like clockwork because that is what some blog told me to do when I first got into plants 3 years ago. Last spring I brought a sad jade plant into a little nursery in Fresno and the owner poked around the pot, pulled the plant out, and said, "This soil holds water like a sponge, you are basically drowning it." I was using plain potting soil instead of a gritty mix, so the roots were sitting wet way too long even though I thought I was being careful. She told me to repot with at least 50 percent pumice or perlite and to only water when the leaves started to look a little soft. I did that with 6 plants that weekend and within 3 weeks the jade pushed out new leaves for the first time in a year. Now I mix my own gritty blend and stick a wooden skewer in the pot to check moisture before I even grab the watering can. Anyone else get their whole watering schedule flipped upside down by one blunt nursery worker?
