Thought Coptic stitch would fall apart on a 300 page book, but it held up fine after 6 months
I was sure Coptic stitch was only good for sketchbooks and small journals, so when a friend asked me to rebind her worn out paperback copy of East of Eden, I told her it would not work. She pushed back and I caved, figuring I would just redo it when it fell apart. Six months later she brought it to a book arts meetup in Baltimore and the spine was still tight, pages opened flat, nothing loose. I had been telling people for 3 years that Coptic was too weak for thick books and now I feel kind of silly. Has anyone else had a binding method they wrote off too fast?
My buddy Dave in Portland rebound a 400 page dictionary with a simple pamphlet stitch two years ago and it is still holding. I told him straight up that was dumb and it would split in a week. He just shrugged and said he only needed it to last through his kid's spelling bee season. That was in 2022 and the thing is still on his shelf, spine intact, no wobble. I felt like a real jerk after talking all that trash. Now I keep my mouth shut before I call a binding weak.
