The local library's rare book room showed me a new spine lining technique last Tuesday
I was in the conservation lab at the Brooklyn Public Library helping with some 1800s texts and the head archivist showed me how they use a silk crepe lining instead of standard mull. The flexibility on those narrow spines was wild compared to what I get at home with my usual materials. Has anyone else tried silk linings on small format books?

But does silk actually hold up over time compared to the standard stuff?

Re: "does silk actually hold up over time" - I've actually seen 50 year old silk linings in BETTER shape than the mull on the same era books. The key is getting the paste right, not the material itself.
