Pro tip: the old binder in Ann Arbor who charged me $15 to watch him sew a book block
Two schools of thought on learning this trade and I keep going back and forth. Last spring I drove to Ann Arbor to meet a guy named Walt who runs a one man shop, and he let me sit and watch him sew a book block for $15 an hour instead of teaching me himself. He said watch 10 books get sewn before you touch a needle, and I did. Some folks swear you need a class with a teacher correcting every stitch, others say just watch and copy until your hands figure it out. Which camp are you in?
