Got told my headbands were too loose by a retired bookbinder at a swap meet

I was at a bookbinding swap meet in Tulsa last month and this old-timer picked up one of my rebinds and just said 'your headbands are gonna let go in a year'. He showed me how to tie them tighter using a bone folder to really seat the thread between each wrap. Has anyone else had a stranger totally change their technique on the spot?

Man, that's rough but also kind of cool. Getting unsolicited advice from a stranger stings at first, but it sounds like he actually knew his stuff. Those old-timers at swap meets have seen it all and usually don't hand out tips unless they care. I bet your headbands are way tighter now, even if it hurt the ego a little.

Is it really that deep though? I mean, it's just a headband, not like the guy was critiquing your life's work or something.
