Bought a cheap paper cutter that wrecked a whole batch of covers

Grabbed a $60 rotary cutter online instead of using my shop's board shear. The blade drifted on the third cut, leaving a jagged edge on five leather covers I'd already tooled. That's about $200 in materials and three hours of work completely wasted. The cutter now sits in a closet as a reminder. Has anyone found a decent mid-range cutter that actually holds a straight line for under $300?

Watched a cheap trimmer ruin a whole box of good paper once. It was for a friend's anniversary cards, and every single cut was off by a hair. You could see the stack getting worse and worse, like a staircase. Ended up having to hand-trim each one with a blade and a straight edge, took all night. That feeling of watching it go wrong just makes your stomach drop.

Oh man that is the WORST feeling. Been there with a cheap guillotine cutter that just would NOT stay square, ruined a whole set of wedding invites. That sinking feeling when you see the blade wander is just awful. For under 300 bucks, I had decent luck with a used Challenge brand cutter from a local print shop closing down, but it was pure luck finding it.
