$150 on a laying press from Etsy was a complete dud
I bought a wooden laying press off Etsy a few months back for $150, thinking it would be a nice upgrade for my home binding projects. The thing arrived with the press screws misaligned, so the plates wouldn't close evenly no matter how I adjusted them. I tried sanding down the edges and even adding felt pads, but it just never gripped the text block right. Has anyone else had bad luck with budget bookbinding tools from small shops online?

Oh, that is such a disappointment. I had a similar thing happen with a nipping press I ordered online a few years back, the threads on the spindle were cut so poorly it would bind up halfway down. It's really frustrating when you pay that kind of money for something that's supposed to be a specialty tool and it's just not made right. I hope you were able to get your money back or at least leave an honest review to warn others.

Did you check if the threads were metric or standard before buying?
