Vent: Our book club's vibe totally shifted after we stopped voting on picks

I mean, for like six months we used this whole voting system where everyone suggested three books and we'd pick the top one. It felt fair but honestly the talks were kinda flat, like we were just hitting plot points. Then in January our host Sarah just started picking herself, saying she'd choose stuff that made her think. The first one was 'Piranesi' and wow, the debate got real. People were arguing about memory and reality for a full hour, someone even brought notes. It's been five picks since then and every meeting has that same heated energy. The cause was totally dropping the 'fair' system for one person's deep cut choice. Has your group ever switched how you pick books and seen a big change in the talk?

Honestly I kinda liked the old system better, it kept things from getting too one-sided.

The underdogs never stood a chance back then though.
