Vent: Our book club almost fell apart over a single line in 'The Goldfinch'

We were meeting at the library in Bellingham last month, and my friend Mark got really heated about a part where the main character lies to his girlfriend. He said, 'That's not just a mistake, it's a character flaw that makes him unreadable.' I'd always seen it as a sad moment, not a deal-breaker. It made me realize we all bring our own past hurts into how we judge a character's choices. Has your group ever split down the middle on a tiny detail like that?

Oh man, that's so real. My old group had a huge fight over whether a side character in a mystery novel was just clumsy or actually evil. It got personal fast.

Clumsy or evil over a side character? That's wild, imagine arguing that hard about someone's fictional butterfingers. It's crazy how those small details can make people circle the wagons like that though.

Ever notice how a book can feel totally different after you've been through a tough time yourself? I read an article once that said we're basically re-writing the story with our own life experiences as we go. That's probably why your friend Mark saw a deal-breaker where you saw a sad moment.
