Unpopular opinion: I kept the book with the slow first chapter and the club actually had the better talk
Our club in Sacramento had to pick between two short novels for March, and I pushed for the one with a 40 page opening that honestly drags. Two people groaned when we voted, but I'd read it before and knew the payoff was coming. We met last Tuesday and the slow part gave us the most to argue about, since half the room wanted to quit at chapter 3. Curious if other clubs ever pick the harder read on purpose, or do you always go with the one that grabs everyone fast?
Guilty as charged, my club did this on purpose once and half the group still brings it up like I committed a crime. Picking the harder read can backfire though, because you need a group that actually finishes it, and let me tell you, my track record on that is not great. I once pushed a dense one and three people showed up to the meeting having read maybe the first ten pages. The talk was still good, just not the talk I planned. Slow books do give you more to chew on, but only if people hang in there past the part where they want to throw it at the wall.
