TIL that some book clubs have a 'no spoiler' rule that lasts for a full year after a book's release
I was reading an article about a book club in Seattle that has this rule. They won't discuss major plot points for any book published within the last 12 months. I found it on a blog about reading group etiquette. It surprised me because my club usually dives right in. The article said it's to respect members who wait for paperback or library copies. I guess it makes sense, but a whole year feels long. Does your club have any rules like that about when you can talk spoilers?

Wow, a whole year... that's intense. My old club had a weird rule where you couldn't say if you hated the book until after everyone had shared their first thoughts. It was supposed to stop people from feeling shy, but it just made the first round of talking feel fake. We dropped it after a few months because it was so annoying to hold back. Rules like that always sound better in theory than they work in a real room with people just trying to chat.

Totally get that. Our group just went with "no mean comments" and let people be honest from the start, which worked way better.
