Question about choosing between hardcover and paperback for book club reading

I used to always pick hardcovers for book club because they looked nicer on my shelf (and I felt fancy), but after lugging a 500 page hardcover to three meetings, I switched to paperbacks. The paperback was way easier to carry around and I could fold it open without cracking the spine, which drove me nuts before. Has anyone else switched formats and noticed it changed how much they actually read for the discussion?

You said 'slightly heavier book' like it's nothing, but have you actually tried carrying a clunky hardcover in a tote bag with a water bottle and snacks for a 45 minute commute?" I feel like that extra weight adds up fast, especially if you're reading something dense like a 600 page doorstopper. Did you ever switch formats or have you always been team hardcover?

Wait, is carrying a slightly heavier book really that big of a deal? Seems like a lot of fuss over something you could just throw in a bag.
