Our group switched from picking books by vote to a rotating host system

The vote always ended with the same three popular authors, but letting a different person pick each month brought in a book from Ghana none of us knew. It made our talks way better because we had no idea what to expect. What's the best way your club has changed how it picks books?

Was there any grumbling when you made the switch? We had the same exact problem, always landing on the same big name thrillers. Letting people take turns forced us out of that rut. Last month someone picked a weird, quiet novel about a lighthouse keeper and it sparked the best fight we've ever had. Half the group hated it, half loved it, but everyone had something to say. Sticking with votes just makes things boring and safe.

Yeah we got some grumbling at first. A couple people were pissed they couldn't just keep picking James Patterson or whatever. But I told them straight up that if they wanted to stay they had to play ball or start their own group. After two rounds people actually started getting into it because the picks were so different. The quiet book that nobody would have voted for ended up being the one everyone talked about for weeks.

Did you get any pushback from the people who liked the old popular authors?
