Our club split over a 'cozy' fantasy pick and it got personal
Last month I suggested a gentle fantasy novel for our group and two members called it 'escapist fluff,' so we voted and read a grimdark epic instead, which half of us hated. How do you all handle the line between pushing comfort zones and just ruining someone's reading month, especially when the vote is close like 4-3?

Book clubs get weird when people treat the vote like a personal attack, but honestly, it's one book out of twelve. Last year my group read a romance novel that two guys complained about the whole meeting, and we just laughed at them and moved on. Maybe your group needs a rule that the loser picks the next month's book, that way nobody feels totally screwed. Or just remember that 4-3 means somebody's gonna be unhappy, that's how votes work. You could also skip the vote entirely and let people dip in and out for the books they don't like. It's reading for fun, not a jury duty summons.
