Our book club almost split over a single chapter in The Goldfinch

We spent 45 minutes arguing about whether Theo's decision at the end of Part 2 was justified or just cowardly. Three members threatened to quit because they felt the character was too immoral to root for. Has anyone else had a book tear their group apart like that?

Is it really that deep though? Sometimes a character is just a selfish jerk and we don't need to spin it into some moral gray area exercise. People can just say they didn't like the book and move on instead of turning it into a whole psychological thing.

90% of our book club walkouts came from The Goldfinch actually! That book is like a Rorschach test for how people see moral gray areas. I notice this same pattern in real life too - people get SO uncomfortable when characters don't fit into neat "good" or "bad" boxes, just like how folks judge parents for making hard choices that aren't ideal.
